Frugal Culture in the Garden City
Art, Music and Theatre don't have be costly to be enjoyable. Here are some frugal options:
- The Art Gallery of Greater Victoria offers admission by donation on the First Tuesday of each month.
- The Maltwood Art Museum and Gallery at the University of Victoria hosts a variety of exhibitions in both the Maltwood Gallery in the University Centre and also the McPherson Library Gallery. A variety of works from the Maltwood collection are also hung throughout the library -- all are free of charge to view.
- An offshoot of the Maltwood is the Legacy Art Gallery at Yates and Broad downtown which features art from the collection of the late Michael Williams.
- There are also many artist-run collectives in town including Open Space, X-Changes Gallery, the Fifty-Fifty Art Collective and Studio 16 1/2. Most shows at these galleries are free admission.
- Annually, there are many art-events -- almost every neighbourhood now boasts its own artisan tour plus the not-to-be-missed Moss Street Paint-In.
- Musically, both the UVic School of Music and the Victoria Conservatory of Music offer concerts and recitals at a wide range of admission prices -- from admission by donation to $20 or more per seat. Check concert listings regularly and you can find bargains.
- For theatre, you can't beat the annual Fringe and Uno Festivals.
